Our friends at the Atheist Experience recently got an email from a viewer that got my old wheels turning. Saki wanted to know the best way to approach a certain argument that some Muslims pull out as evidence of their God being cooler than your God. Or your non-God, in this case. Russell Glasser thought I’d like to take a crack at it, and he was right. (Thanks for the forward, Russell!)
From Saki’s email:
ok, i realize that you probably don’t do this sorta thing, but i’m getting really really ticked of over this one god damned (pardon the pun) argument that keeps popping up that i’ve been having to put to rest a good ten to fifteen times now… someone or the other quotes something from their holy book and goes “well this refers to this scientific discovery that wasn’t made until recently. How could people from the 7th century possibly know that?”
Hey, it’s the return of the Quranic scientific miracle! We got into this a little back in chapter 4, but it’s definitely worth discussing on its own. The exact argument that Saki is referring to is laid out in detail at this site. You can read it in full there.
Here’s the 10 second run down for all you lazy bastards out there: the Quran describes embryology in vivid detail which Mohammed’s 7th century local yokels couldn’t possibly have known about. The Quran wins! May Allah have mercy on you silly assholes.
Lets jump in and do it to it.
So far we’ve covered 11 of Mohammed’s lady-friends. This post covers 7 more, plus a few others. Yowzaa. Kind of makes you wonder if he imposed the 4 wife maximum, just so he could collect all the women for himself.
Now some of the wives were clearly more important than others. Some of them — like Aisha and Safiya — have tons of information out there about them. Others? Barely one story. And to confuse matters, some of the wives actually had the same name. Jessica is to my generation as Zainab is to Mo’s. And then there are the spelling variations on the names. Oh mah fucking gah, it’s been a pain in the ass.
Anyway, this is it. The last post about Mohammed’s wives. After this it’s back to business as usual. Enjoy it, babies!
Friend X, a really good friend of mine, is a fairly liberal Muslim. There’s something that’s been eating away at her for a few weeks, and she wanted to talk to me about it. Friend X recently read about Mohammed’s concubines, and she doesn’t really know what to make of this information. “He’s supposed to be the role model for all of us. How the fuck am I supposed to respect him knowing that he had sex slaves?” How the fuck, indeed. Friend X and I are going to talk about this stuff at a later date. I wanted a little time on my own to learn about all of Mohammed’s wives and concubines before we get together to make sense of it. Thought I’d share it with you guys.
I’m taking a little detour from chapter 7. This post is going to be all about Mohammed’s leading ladies. And, woah boy, there are a lot of ’em. A lot more than I had even known about. Most of the stuff we know about them comes from hadith. I think by now, most people know how I feel about those. They’re hearsay. Regardless, the vast majority of Muslim accept and believe hadith. So I’ll look at them the same way I look at the Quran. (With a raised eyebrow and a shit-eating grin on my face.) Let’s jump right in and get to it.
